STEVEN BREKELMANS | New Drawings of Bottles, Cans, Hats, Cheese, Sculptures, Posters, Casseroles, Azaleas, Canes, Flags, Trash bins, Cacti, Glasses, Lighters, Mirrors...
This collection of new drawings, an extension of Steven Brekelmans’ studio sculpture practice, allow for creative gestures that would otherwise be impossible. Casseroles, buckets, seashells and all manner of castoffs humourously augment and disarm the formal geometric constructions. These flattened three-dimensional efforts, rendered in an illustrative, comic book style, build upon his previous exploration of collecting, labour, formalism and worth.
Steven Brekelmans was born in Vancouver, attended the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and graduated from the University of Victoria’s MFA program. Working across a variety of mediums, he has exhibited his work both locally and internationally at Or Gallery, CSA Space, UNIT/PITT Projects, Western Front, The Museum of Longing and Failure (Norway), The Western Bridge (Seattle), Or Gallery Berlin, and Soi Fischer Projects (Toronto).
